Mel Gibson is certainly good at playing 'suppressed emotion'--of that there's no doubt. But this film is just way too cliche. I think it had to do with poor writing mostly. The show was well-filmed, though a little on the brutal side. I don't mind realism, but seeing a cannonball take someone's head off doesn't seem to me to be that spectacular. The plot leaves much to be desired. It's just another tired, old action story where the 'hero's' fire is lit by someone taking away the ones he loved, with the ultimate result that he goes on a rampage right through to the climax scenes.
Too cliche--and I'm a serious revolutionary war history buff...
