A Satire that Does not Always Work
Nach Moviedog (400 Kritiken) , 11. Jul 2011[Hoch bewerteter Kritikenschreiber]
The premise is great: the iron curtain is about to collapse, US army soldiers with nothing to do but to fulfill their American Dream of material wealth at the expense of their employer by embezzling anything from Mop Glow to guns. There are quite a few moments is which this satire about the questionable presence of a large army in Germany at that particular point in time works well. Great are, for example, the scenes with the mild-mannered and weak commander Ed Harris--a man who would rather manage a winery than an army post.
However, there are some weak points that weaken the message and the movie, as they work against the overall tone of the satire: the nearly Shakepearean quality of the love story between the Phoenix character and the daughter of the new, tough drill sergeant (a doomed affair), the dark nature of the relationship between the drill sergeant and the Phoenix character (this is only about one man trying to destroy another and is not really related to the plot of the movie), and, finally, the Phoenix character himself: he is very detached and I found it difficult to feel anything for him.- War diese Mitgliederkritik hilfreich?
